Chronic Pain
One in four Americans, or about 75 million, suffer from chronic pain. According to the Wall Street Journal, the numbers are so high “in part because of poor access to and understanding of the best therapies available. Undertreated pain ruins lives and costs the nation $100 billion a year in lost productivity. But innovations in pain management
hold hope.” WSJ—4/18/2005.
At Franklin Rehab, we believe the key factor for a patient’s relief is their understanding of all the treatment options so they can take a more active role in determining the best course of treatment for them.
Franklin Rehab has developed the 3-phase approach to recovery as our way of helping patients understand where they are in their course of treatment. By breaking your treatment into the three phases, you can avoid the most common patient mistake… thinking the problem is gone when the pain has gone away. So how will you know where you really stand? Use the Franklin Rehab 3-Phase Recovery System to manage your recovery.
PHASE 1: Eliminate & Reduce The Pain. Obviously, your first objective is to reduce the pain with the ultimate
objective of eliminating it.
PHASE 2: Restore Normal Function. After the pain is under control, the goal of regular physical therapy is to restore normal function. Your goal should be to restore and prevent reoccurrence. That’s what phase 3 is all about.
PHASE 3: Strengthen & Prevent Reoccurrence. Exercise and physical therapy is the best way to avoid the reoccurrence of your injury. Re-injury and set backs are very common, particularly for patients 50 and older, who discontinue exercise before restoring the strength and flexibility necessary for normal, injury-free activity.
