Four tips for successful ankle and foot pain treatment

Ankle and Foot Pain Treatment

An injury or condition that limits the use of your feet or ankles is no matter to take lightly. Without the use of your feet or ankles, it’s difficult to accomplish many daily tasks. It’s important to provide great care for your feet and ankles when they are in pain.

Treatments for foot and ankle pain vary depending on the severity of your injury or condition. Sometimes, you need some rest and simple home treatments. In more serious cases, you’ll need professional treatment.

Either way, the following four tips for foot and ankle pain can help you on your treatment journey:

  1. Rest — Physical activity can cause more pain and inflammation. Do your best to stay off of your foot while recovering. While resting, elevate your ankle above your heart level to help drain excess fluid and reduce swelling.

  2. Ice — Use an ice pack on your foot or ankle to help reduce swelling and pain. Do this two or three times a day for no longer than 15 minutes each time. Icing for any longer could constrict the blood vessels and create more pain.

  3. Compress — Wrapping a compression bandage around the foot or ankle can help reduce swelling. Be careful not to wrap it too tightly because you could cut off your circulation.

  4. Get professional treatment — An occasional sore ankle or foot is part of life, but severe and long-term pain requires professional healthcare treatment. If you have severe or chronic foot and ankle pain, don’t wait to get help. Ignoring the pain can result in a bigger issue like permanent disability.
